JavaScript Error Handling: Best Practices and Patterns

JavaScript6 min read

Write robust JavaScript code with proper error handling strategies.

Error handling is crucial for building reliable applications. JavaScript provides try/catch/finally blocks, custom error classes, and Promise-based error handling for async code.

Try/catch wraps code that might throw errors. The catch block receives the error object. Finally runs regardless of success or failure — perfect for cleanup. You can throw custom errors with throw new Error("message").

Custom error classes extend the Error class for domain-specific errors: class ValidationError extends Error. Include additional properties like field name and validation rules for better debugging.

For async code, use .catch() on Promises or try/catch with async/await. Global error handlers (window.onerror, window.addEventListener("unhandledrejection")) catch errors that slip through.

Practice error handling in CompileZ's JavaScript editor. Create functions that throw errors and handle them gracefully.
